Supernatural. FIRST. RECAP. EVER.

I have been reading alot of recaps for korean dramas, and I used to frequent the witty humourous writing in Televisionwithoutpity forums for recap when I couldn't get enough of my favourite dramas. But there's no pretty pictures overthere so I thought I'd give it a shot here. Why Supernatural? I was backing up my new dvds and saw this really handy Ctrl+E option in GOM Player whilst I was checking my files. And thus, ensued a night of happy clicking. I picked and chose from maybe 300 over captures to give you these.

Just after one episode, and I have an even deeper sense of appreciation for those amazing recappers at dramabeans! I salute you! What a lot of work. You gals are amazing!
I don't think I will be doing anymore Supernatural though, since the show's already into its seventh season, and I do not relish the idea of playing catch up. Maybe Once Upon a Time. I do like that idea.

And so, I give you my first humble attempt at recapping:

SUPERNATURAL
Season 1, Episode 2

WENDIGO

Blackwater Ridge
Lost Creek, Colorado

SOMEONE DIES:

We see Gary (Finn Hudson of pre-Glee fame), Brad and Tommy camping. Brad then goes outside to take a leak.

He hears a noise in the woods and Gary sticks his head out of the tent in an ill-advised move which promptly gets him taken screaming into the darkness of night. Tommy is terrified inside his tent, whilst something claws its way inside and he screams.

Palo Alto, California:

Sam goes to visit Jessie's grave. He talks to her and tears up abit.
Just as he places the flowers on the tombstone, a creepy dirty hand shoots up from the ground and grabbed his wrist! ARGH!

Sam wakes with a start, to find that he's actually cruising along with Dean along a road with Foreigner's "Hot blooded" playing on the radio. Dean is worried about Sam's nightmares of late, but Sam just brushes it off. Dean even offers Sam to drive his baby for a while, much to Sam's surprise.

"Dean your whole life you never once asked me that."

Sam's unsure of leaving Stanford so soon. But Dean counters that digging around for a week yielded nothing, so they were better off on the road. The brothers are looking for their dad to learn more about the thing that killed Jessica, and Dean remarks that the thing that showed up again after 20 years must be linked to their dad's disappearance. They arrive at Lost Creek Trail following the coordinates in the journal their dad left them.

TALK TO THE AUTHORITIES

The inner geek in me is so impressed with the 3dness of the map!
Sam informs us that there are lodes of abandoned silver and gold mines all over the ridge. ( hehe)

The brothers pretend to be Environmental study majors working on a paper, and Dean says 'Recycle, man' rather unconvincingly (lol). To which Ranger Wilkinson responds with 'Bull.', and says that they are friends that Haley girl, who has reported her brother's missing.

Dean coolly goes along with that, and they discover that although the missing brother, Tommy has not exceeded the days stated on his camping permit, Haley has been hounding the rangers to help find him.
He slyly remarks that 'that girl's a pistol' asks the ranger for a copy of the permit so he can 'show her' the exact date and help convince her not to worry. And voilá ! He got the contact details.

Sam's impatient and doesn't see a need to talk to Haley. He just wants to go straight to the coordinates to find their dad. Dean says "we should know what we are walking into before we actually walk into it" and then he gives him that DUH face which is hilarious. He wants to know why Sam is now "Shoot first and ask questions later", Sam gives a serious look and replies "Since now." But Dean wins! Because, we now cut to-

TALK TO THE FAMILY

It tickles me every time someone asks to see some ID from these two. Dean flashes this fake ID which somehow convinces Haley and she lets these guys right in. She's lucky they are the good guys. Haley compliments Dean's car, which pleases him no end, and he mouths this MAN to Sam behind Haley's back. Dean digs hot chick who digs his baby!
( I miss the good old days when Dean's still cute and mischievous and not jaded like he is now. But all the suffering and pain will get to him I guess. )

They asks questions about how they know Tommy's in trouble, and Haley shows them a video Tommy emailed them before he stopped checking in for days. Sam saw something and gets Haley to email him the video.

PUB : RESEARCH TIME!

I can make out that that laptop's a Dell Inspiron. I had one from 2006 too. It still works now!
Its kinda funny that 'Sam' pasted a sticker right over the logo. Days before product placement! hehe

Sam presents his findings in the local newspaper reports about how there have been missing people in 1982, 1959, 1936. 'Every 23 years, just like clockwork.' Sam shows Dean how a dark shape moved behind Tommy's tent in just 3 frames! Good eye Sam!
Dean gives Sam a dig and a  'I told you something was going on!' lol siblings.

QUESTION THE WITNESS

They go visit a sole survivor from 1959, who was a small child at the time.
He lives in this dark dumpy place, if it was me, I think I will have this blinding bright room at night just so I can see all the corners of my room. Just saying. Maybe he's well-adjusted by now.

Once again they are rangers who wanted to know what exactly attacked and killed his parents. They tried convincing him that if they knew exactly what they were dealing with, they can stop it. The old man doubts that because nobody ever believed him.

Sam uses his puppy-dog superpowers and persuades the old man to start sharing.

The old man relates that he saw nothing, because the creature moved too fast to see, but he heard a roar.
He shared that it got inside their cabin, and it knew how to unlock their door. He shows them what the creature did to him. Its a demon, he says.

Upon leaving his apartment, the boys hash out what they just heard. They rule out spirits and demons, because they know better. Sam says something which makes Dean mock him.

"Its corporeal."
'Corporeal? Excuse me Professor."
"Shut Up. So what do you think?"
".......we are talking about a creature, that is corporeal.
Which means we can kill it."
lol...Dean...

They discuss that they cannot let Haley go into the woods, but its hard to convince her otherwise since they can't tell her there is a monster there.
Dean decides that they will have to go along to protect her.
Sam isn't too happy that they now have to babysit too. Dean just gives him a long searching look, at his brother who used to be the sweet one. He tosses the bag of firearms hard at Sam, who gives him a look of exasperation.

HUNT and RESCUE

 BLACKRIDGE WOODs:

The Impala cruises up to the merry band of Roy, Haley and Ben. Haley is rightly dubious of the fact that Dean and Sam are in fact, rangers, because they came trekking in biker boots and jeans. Dean goes "Sweetheart, I don't do shorts." hehe

Dean tells Roy that they just want to help find their brother. Cuts to a urgent-he's going to eat me-shot showing a snarly creature advancing on a trussed up Tommy and we hear Gary's screams of fear as the creature chows down on him a few feet away from Tommy.

Meanwhile, Roy helps save Dean from walking right into a bear trap, but he's so snarky about it you just know that he's gonna be the token annoying victim. Haley confronts Dean about them not carrying any provisions and carrying a duffel bag, basically lying about being rangers, to which he owns up and say they are just two brothers looking for their dad. He throws her off abit when he says how this is probably the most honest time he's been with a woman.... ever. haha! He adorably tells her "I packed provisions." and takes out a large bag of M&Ms and starts eating.

They arrive at Blackwater Ridge, and Sam looks crestfallen when Roy confirms they are at coordinates 35, -1 11.
Their dad is obviously not in this neck of the woods.
The boys are alert to the fact that its so quiet there, there's not even crickets.
(Next time I am ever in the woods, I am so gonna run for it if I don't hear any crickets.)

They come upon the bloody campsite. Ripped tents and Tommy's broken satellite phone. Sam stops Haley from calling out Tommy's name loudly in the woods. I guess she is worried about her brother, so I can't really fault her for being dumb here.

Dean found out the tracks just vanished after being dragged from the campsite.
He concludes that its no skinwalker or black dog.

Dean comforts Haley that Tommy could still be alive. Then they hear a man screaming for help in the woods. As the group all run to find the man, upon seeing no one they make their way back to camp, they realized someone made off with their packs, along with their GPS and Satellite phone. Sam muses that the thing is very smart and wants to cut off their communication for help.

They look at their dad's journal and Sam flips to the part about wendigos. Dean is unconvinced because wendigos are usually in Minnesota woods or northern Michigan and never this far west. Sam points out that the claws, the way it can mimic a human's voice makes it a wendigo. Dean dryly comments that now guns are useless.

They go back and try to convince the rest to leave the woods now. Roy sneers and refuses to believe that they are dealing with a dangerous creature, or that he needs protection from Sam and Dean. Sam tells him that the creature is "a damn near perfect hunter, smarter than you." But he goes too far and says they must save Roy's stupid sorry ass and gets a derisive laugh from Roy. I guess he wasn't in a puppydog mood.

Haley stops the argument and insists that she wants to save her brother and nope she's not leaving without him.

Dean tells them they need to settle in and protect themselves. He draws protective symbols in the dirt, and Roy once again mocks them. Not too long now Roy.

Dean walks over to talk to Sam. Sam tries to avoid the talk but Dean tells him he's not fine. He says Sam's like a powder keg and its not like him. ( Wow, so his anger issues start right here. )
Dean says he's supposed to be the belligerent ( hostile and aggressive) one. Sam responds that he's disappointed that dad didn't end up being here.
Dean tells Sam he doesn't think dad has ever been this crazy. Sam is wondering why they are even here. He just wants to get those people back to town, and hit the road looking for dad.

Love how the light falls on Jensen Ackles profile.
Dean taps the Journal and replies : " This is why. This book. This is dad's single, most valuable possession. Everything he knows about every evil thing is in here."
(  I'd digitize it and get it backed up on some hard drive, and not just go flipping around in it like the fire hazard it is, just a thought )

He continues: " He's passed it on to us. I think he wants us to pick up where he left off. You know, saving people, hunting things. The family business."
( This line right here, is the one they use as a voiceover for every THEN section in season 2.)

THE.Journal.

Sam says that he just wants to find dad, and find Jessica's killer.
Its all he can think about.
Dean, in his older brother wisdom, tells Sam he must be prepared that this search could take awhile, and meantime, he cannot keep that anger in the long haul because it will kill him. Sam asks Dean how does he do it, and how does dad do it. Dean looks over and tells Sam that even with their screwed up family, by helping other people, like Haley and Ben, makes what they do more bearable. He adds that killing as many evil sobs as he possibly can also helps. Sam gives him a small smile.

Suddenly, a man's voice shouts into the quiet night. "Help me! Heelp" Roy goes running into the darkened woods, and although he's quite brave to do it, he's also very stupid for not heeding the words of Winchesters. hehe. He shoots into the trees, and runs out "of the magic circle", he doesn't get far when something comes down from the trees, twists his head and pulls him right up.

White out from Sam's flashlight. Morning after.

Sam sits pensively against a broken stump, playing absentmindedly with the rosary tied to the journal.

Dean goes about and fingers long scratches in the trees whilst Haley struggles to accept that these things aren't supposed to be real. Ben sits quietly, probably regretting tagging along, but somehow not flipping out.
Haley asks Dean how he knows these stuff, to which he replies "runs in the family".
Sam comes back and to Dean's approving glance now states that he wants to kill this evil sob.

They explain to the normal folk all about how wendigos came about. And how Tommy is alive because he is probably stored somewhere dark, hidden and safe, to eat later. Guns and knives are useless, and we have to torch the sucker. Dean brandishes a small fire extinguisher and a small bottle.

They trek along the woods in search of its tracks. Ballsy I say. Sam calls Dean to attention and they all look up. Bloodied claw marks at the upper tree trunks show how the creature moves about. ( I just hope they didn't hurt the trees too mark cutting those in.) Sam feels that the clawprints seem almost too easy to follow. Something growls up above. Some blood drips onto Haley's shoulder. She looks up in horror and jumps out of the way to see Roy's mangled body fall down. Dean checks the body to see that Roy died of a broken neck.

They all make a run for it. Ben trips and Sam slows down and picks him right up. Dean and Haley see something which makes her scream.

Sam and Ben run to where they are, but both of them are gone. Sam sees the broken molotov bottle and yells for Dean to no avail, but Ben cheers up when he found the pretty M&Ms lighting up their path for them.I guess thats what Ben's purpose here in the woods. Company for Sam. hehe Sam says: " This is better than breadcrumbs." teehee

They come upon an aforementioned abandoned mine. Which the wendigo has put on a sign to warn people away? I can't be sure. These two walks bravely into the darkness, and almost runs headon into the wendigo who came back to stow his fresh captives. Sam has to clamp his hand over Ben's mouth to stop him from making a sound.

They continue along the tunnel, and then with incredible TV Luck fall through some rotten wooden floor board into a cavern below right where the others are held.

That clump of roots on Sam's shoulder is funny. Kudos for Jared in keeping a straight face.

They see Haley and Dean, also trussed up at a corner. Sam cuts Dean down. Haley sees Tommy hanging in another corner, and to their great relief and comic horror when he suddenly gasps for air.

Dean stands up with some difficulty and he spies something in the bags the wendigo has tossed carelessly in the same cave. I would have just tossed it off a cliff, but I guess the wendigo wanted to see what he can play with before he goes back to hibernate. And we have two flare guns, which will incinerate it and get the job done.

The wendigo's growling and be heard and Dean decides to lure it out of the group's way.
He hands Sam the other gun and tells him to get the others to safety.

You're thinking what I'm thinking? Its nice to know what your brother thinks.

Dean calls all sorts of funny stuff to get the wendigo's attention. "Bring it on baby! I taste gooood."

Sam gets the little family near to the exit, and tells them to leave as he waits for the wendigo.
As he backs up against the wall, waiting for it to round the corner, its just funny to see that its right behind him. One of those "Its behind me, isn't it, moments". He fires his flare and it bounces off the walls.

Sam tears back to the others and protects them like a mother hen, as the wendigo slooowly comes up ( what ever happened to its super speed? Maybe its not used to having so many prey all at once. But I guess they are cornered so speed is moot). It just stands there, and lets out a roar to show off his skinny ribs. Just in time for Dean to yell "Hey!" and Dean shoots it.

Some people hated the special effects. I thought it was pretty decent tracking and effects considering the show was only in its first season so budget restraints are to be expected. And its a TV show. One shouldn't expect a movie's effects standard. In fact, the one thing that bothered me was Season One kinda had this cheap camera equipment that made things look really grainy. Or its my dvds. I dunno.

Dean goes : "Not bad huh!" Look at them smiling at the flames.

BACK TO CIVILIAZATION

Tommy's in the ambulance, and Ben's making the "Official" report about this humongous grizzly bear. Because really, who'd believe them?
I am glad that more people know that there are monsters out there though. And are grateful for the brothers' help.

Haley expresses her thanks to Dean, and says she don't know how to thank him.
He smiles at her suggestively and she smiles. "Must you cheapen the moment?" He goes: "Yeah!"

But his cheekiness is rewarded with a peck on the cheek.

The boys sit on the hood of their car, and Dean says: "Man I hate camping." Sam rejoins : "Me too."
Dean tells Sam : "You know we are going to find dad right?"
Sam: Ï know. But in the meantime, I'm driving."

Dean thinks for a bit, then tosses his car keys at Sam, who catches it and away they go!
They drive off to Rush's "Fly by Night" .

I am finally done with this. Took me a good 8 hours I think. Its like a workday! I almost gave up at many points but its the last day of 2011, and I got nothing better to do. Maybe I should go bake some cookies.
This episode kinda reminds me of XFiles- Detour, which for a large part also happens in the woods. They did not suggest those invisible creatures eating the victims though, just being territorial. hehe.

I liked this episode. The formula may be simple but all dramas work on some kind of formula.
I enjoyed the way the relationship between the brothers played out.
I like the fact that, they are actually selfless enough to risk their own family to save another unrelated family.
I like that Sam gets a grip on his anger and becomes the good guy he usually is.

In fact, I loved almost ALL the episodes in the seven seasons so far.
The only one I didn't enjoy was the GhostFacers Blair Witch type of camera works. Made me dizzy.

I hope you enjoyed reading the recap. Cause let's face it, I didn't really enjoy writing it. lol

More details on the episode can be found here so I don't see a need to repeat information.
Also superwiki is an awesome Supernatural site.
